Man Dies in Police Custody During a Mental Health Crisis


Flint, Mi - On October 1st at approximately 5:55 PM a Man having a mental health crisis died while in Police custody. The Police arrived at the Lapeer Gardens Apartments shortly before, in response to an emergency call from the Flint Fire Department. The Man had allegedly covered himself in a flammable substance in his apartment.


"After a brief attempt to communicate with the subject, officers began to escort him out of the building to the waiting personnel. During this process, the subject became extremely combative and resisted exiting the premises.

In accordance with established protocols, officers deployed compliance control measures to manage the situation.
Once control was established, officers recognized that the subject required immediate medical attention. Medical personnel on scene began an assessment, however, the subject tragically passed away at the location."

The Police officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, and Chief of Police Terence Green has requested a full investigation by the Michigan State Police.

In video's shared from the scene, witnesses stated that the man had been beaten to death in the stairway of his apartment.
