Flint, Mi - Sheriff Chris Swanson, just took the stage at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) to represent Flint and share a message of unity and hope. Swanson gained national attention in 2020 when he joined protesters in a Black Lives Matter (BLM) march in Flint, choosing to walk alongside the community instead of standing in opposition.
During his speech at the DNC, Swanson spoke on that moment, where he set aside his riot gear and asked the crowd, "What do you want me to do?" The crowd responded, "Walk with us," and Swanson did just that. His decision to march with the protesters became a call for meaningful dialogue between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
In his speech Swanson emphasized the importance of listening to and understanding the concerns of those seeking justice and equality.
Regardless of what you think of Chris Swanson, it was surreal to see Flint highlighted on that stage as an example to be modeled after. I couldn't be prouder.
