Genesee County Approves Flock Cameras, Adds Warrant Requirement

Flint, Mi –

On March 19, Genesee County Board of Commissioners officially approved the renewal and expansion of its Flock camera contracts, but not without adding new restrictions.

During Wednesday’s meeting, commissioners first passed an amendment in a narrow 5–4 vote requiring federal agencies to obtain a warrant before accessing data from the system. The measure also includes a notification requirement to the board within 24 hours, with exceptions for emergency situations at the Sheriff’s discretion.

Commissioners who voted to pass the amendment requiring warrants: Loyd, Winfrey, Brown, Avery, Weighill

Commissioners who voted to block the amendment requiring warrants: Goetzinger, Shumaker, Cousineau, Flewelling

Following the amendment’s approval, the board moved forward with both resolutions, RES-2025-2778 and RES-2025-2833, finalizing the renewal of the contract and expansion of the county’s FLOCK camera system.

The vote comes after strong public turnout, where the majority of residents who spoke voiced opposition to the program, largely citing privacy concerns.
